Adding / Removing Windows Components

Step 1

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > double click Add / Remove Programs.

Step 2

Click the Windows Setup tab and you will see an alphabetical list of the installed components. They will either be ticked (selected), unticked (not selected) or ticked in a grey box (partially selected).

Step 3

Click on Accessories and you will see how many components have been selected. By clicking the Details button you will see exactly which components have been installed. Tick to install and untick to uninstall items. You will notice that the size of components is displayed which is handy to know if you have a small hard drive.

Bearing this in mind, you will be able to uninstall components such as Desktop Wallpaper and Games to save space but be careful with your choices as some components are essential. For example, unticking Dial Up Networking in Communications will prevent you from connecting to the Internet if you use a dial up modem.

Step 4

When you finished, click OK to accept the changes you have made. You will be prompted for your Windows CD to complete the process unless you have a specially compressed copy of the Windows system files on your PC in which case the installation process will be automatic.
